Traditional, yet innovative
Designing a smart streetlight fixture that is traditional, yet innovative was the key challenge in creating the Aspira together with Sustainder.
This post-top fixture is equipped with sensors, LED lights and a smart cassette that is expandable for future needs.

Based on tradition
The inspiration for Aspira is the traditional cone-shaped fixture, designed by Dutch industrial designer Friso Kramer. This iconic design is a well-known archetype that is or has been in almost every street in the Netherlands. We gave the cone-shaped fixture a facelift, left the general shape intact and tweaked the details to give it a modern look that fits with the innovative character of Sustainder.
Internal aesthetics
We did some clever designing to give the cone-shape fixture a modern look and feel. For example, we used a fully transparent cover to give the fixture a clean appearance. The transparent cover enables people on the street /passerby’s to look at the “internal ceiling” of the fixture, so we paid extra attention to the aesthetics of the internals: the reflection plate. The reflection plate is another example of how we kill two birds with one stone. By integrating this reflection plate we did not only cover up the technical components inside the fixture, but more importantly, it reflects the light beautifully.
Clever solutions
Using a fully transparent cover introduced new design challenges: while it gives more control over how the light is projected onto the road surface, it could potentially create unwanted glare in some situations. We designed an optionally-used LED-cover that eliminates the unwanted glare and at the same time emphasises the casted shadows on the reflection plate. A win-win solution.
